When I was 20 or so, I went to the funeral of a friend who'd been killed in a random act of senseless violence by a stranger she'd never met before. I was moved by the several hundred people who came to the service, and imagined there were hundreds more who would have come if they had known about the funeral or could afford to. I was struck by how much our lives impact those around us, whether we realize it or not. And we often don't.
But the fact is that we are all interconnected. We share space and time together, and our nature as human beings is that we are highly affected by one another. We make each other happy, we are angered by others, we love.
And, it seems, most people live as if their lives had no impact on others. Or worse, that their life wasn't impacted BY others.
So Generate Kindness occurs to me not only as a way of generating kindness in the world by reminding people to create it where it isn't, but also as a demonstration of how powerful sharing with one another can be.
The site was launched at 11:51 PST on Christmas Day, 2001. The intention is to create an ongoing experiment in the ripple effect. Since then, I've actively given away stickers as the message has taken on more significance in the world. please help Generate Kindness, whether you get stickers or not.
I invite you to generate kindness in your world, and to inspire others to do the same.
